Important information for refugees from Ukraine without Ukrainian citizenship (third-country nationals)
What does this mean exactly?
- Until 4 March 2025, third-country nationals could obtain a residence permit under Section 24 of the Residence Act (AufenthG).
- This protection status expired on 5 March 2025 and will not be automatically extended.
- Anyone who now wishes to remain in Germany must apply for a new residence permit for another legally permissible purpose of residence, such as:
- Employment/work
- Education / vocational training
- Studies
- Family reunification
- Humanitarian residence in special cases
Who does this affect?
This provision applies to all third-country nationals who:
did not have a permanent residence permit in Ukraine (e.g. only temporary study or work visas) or did not have international protection status (e.g. refugee protection) in Ukraine.
What happens if no new application is submitted?
If no new residence permit is applied for, legal residence in Germany expires. The person concerned is then required to leave the country. This can lead to problems with authorities, access to social benefits or even deportation.
What should those affected do now?
- Seek advice urgently!
A specialist advice centre for migration, refugees or asylum seekers can help you find suitable accommodation, fill out applications and clarify which options are available to you individually.
- Prepare documents:
- Passport / travel documents
- Proof of previous residence in Ukraine
- Documents relating to work, training or studies in Germany (if available)
- Act quickly:
The earlier an application is submitted, the better – this increases the chances of obtaining a new legal residence permit and avoiding problems with the immigration authorities.
