Safe reception – the rights of queer refugees in reception facilities

The LSVD’s new project Rainbow Shelter: https://rainbow-shelter.de/, LSVD⁺, has been running since the start of 2025. The project focuses on the rights and protection of queer refugees who are going through the asylum process and have to live in initial reception centres or similar accommodation. Sadly, there are frequent incidents of violence against queer residents in these centres, both from other residents and from staff. Even the support provided after people have suffered violence needs to be improved. This situation cannot continue!

That is why the project team has developed information materials such as flyers and posters that explain people’s rights and the support available in this type of situation. There is also a reporting form on the project website (rainbow-shelter.de) where incidents of violence can be reported anonymously. This helps us to advocate for long-term improvements. The team can also be reached by telephone or email to work with the victims to find the best possible local support options in specific cases. Another service offered by the project is training for staff at initial reception centres to make them more supportive and aware of queer issues.
